Fumigation

What is Fumigation?

Fumigation is a pest control method that involves using toxic gases (fumigants) to eliminate pests in a sealed environment. It is commonly used for controlling insects, rodents, and microorganisms in buildings, warehouses, shipping containers, soil, and stored goods.

How Does Fumigation Work?

Preparation & Sealing

The area or structure is sealed (e.g., using tarps, plastic sheets, or airtight enclosures).
All humans, pets, and food items are removed.
Warning signs are posted to prevent accidental exposure.

Aeration & Clearance

After a specific time, the area is ventilated to remove residual gases.
Air quality tests ensure the space is safe before re-entry.

Releasing the Fumigant

A gas or vapor-based pesticide (e.g., Methyl
Bromide, Phosphine, Sulfuryl Fluoride) is introduced.
The fumigant penetrates all areas, including cracks, walls, and packaging.
The exposure period varies based on pest type, temperature, and gas concentration.

Types of Fumigation

Structural Fumigation

Used in buildings (homes, offices, warehouses) to eliminate termites, bed bugs, and wood-boring insects.
Example: Tenting a house for termite control.

Commodity & Stored Product Fumigation

Treats grains, food storage facilities, and shipping containers.
Prevents infestations by weevils, moths, and beetles.

Soil Fumigation

Used in agriculture to kill nematodes, fungi, weeds, and insects in the soil before planting.
Example: Methyl Bromide fumigation in farms.

Container Fumigation

Applied in international shipping to prevent pest transfer across borders.
Required for compliance with global phytosanitary regulations.
